Orthotics
From an absolute necessity to a trendy
addition, orthotics have a definitive place in the
practice of sport medicine. A stable (foundation) from
the foot up is necessary to participation in many
activities.
The basic principal of pedorthics is providing a
subtalar neutral position for the foot to provide balance
and efficient function to the foot, the knee, the hip,
and the back, as it goes through the gait cycle.
Pronation accounts for the vast majority of problems,
with supination an occasional offender.
The ideal orthotic is a semi-flexible insert molded
from the foot (by a foam or a plaster cast) to fit
specific footwear. Dr. Woollam uses the orthotic group
laboratories (
www.theorthoticgroup.com) to
manufacture his orthotics. They also have a large
selection of footwear, which can be seen online at
their website.
Some conditions, which are helped by orthotics, include
plantar fascitis, patellofemoral syndrome (chondromalacia
patellae), iliotibial band (ITB) problems, and back
issues.
Orthotics can be fitted and ordered through Dr. Woollam.
Most workplace extended benefit plans cover part or all
of these services.
